LESBIANS AND THE BIG BANG

When I have a had a bad day at work, and I want to let off some steam or I want to forget my troubles, I am going to go to a bar, pick up a guy and bang him until the sun comes up. If I went on a business trip, and I met a man at a conference and he came on to me and I did nothing to resist his charms, I would go to his hotel room and I would slip out before the wake up call came.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with these scenarios. I am an adult, it was consensual sex and condoms were used. The only problem is that I am a lesbian. A lesbian. I am someone who is attracted to women--physically and emotionally. People who know me, know that I am a lesbian. In fact, I am surprised that there isn't a big L on my driver's license. I am the kind of lesbian that likes George Clooney--I think he is attractive and appealing, but I do not have any romantic notions about him. I see what straight women see in him, but I would like him as a friend, not a lover. And that is because...I am a lesbian.

I am the kind of lesbian who has no problem watching romantic films about straight couples or reading a love story about a man and a woman. That has been our media and culture for many years, that is what has been available to us. But I was the lesbian who would dream about a Pride and Prejudice where Mr. Darcy was just Darcy--a beautiful mysterious woman. I would wonder why Sally couldn't meet another Sally? I would always hope for a time in my life where lesbians would have their stories told and eventually that did happen. There have been wonderful films in the last few years that have shown lesbians as real people. The publishing world has finally discovered that lesbians love romances and television has slowly found its spine. Television executives now know that lesbians can help ratings or at least not hurt ratings.

But the thing that continues to piss off this lesbian is this ridiculous idea that lesbians will continue to have sex with men--as a way to cope with stress, to show they have or need power over men, and a way to confirm that they are indeed a lesbian.

This leads me to Pepa. LHDP shook up our world with her having butcher block sex in the kitchen with Aitor. I hated this storyline for two reasons: it was just stupid for Pepa to believe that she had to get pregnant "the old fashioned way" and she then had sex with Aitor because she was drunk and distraught.

I know lesbian couples who have gone to the sperm bank, chosen a donor, brought home the sperm in a cooler, purchased a new turkey baster and the greatest hits of Enya. They light some candles, make love, open sesame and hello sperm! No shots, no doctors and no stirrups. All of Pepa's fears were without base. But the bigger issue is that Pepa was a lesbian who was in love with a woman, and in her lowest moment she had sex with a man. And now there is talk that Pepa could be doing that again in Season 9.

I will accept Pepa doing this as long as straight men will turn to men in times of stress. When I see a straight stud make a move on a gay man, then I will see more of a balance in storytelling. To actually believe that a lesbian is lusting, fantasizing or even horny for a man's body is as hard to believe as George Clooney seducing Rupert Everett--because he had a bad day.

I am not saying that every lesbian in the world has not ever been with a man. I am saying that when a film or TV show has one or two lesbians, they should be lesbian, with "lesbian tendencies". They should be women loving women. If the world media overwhelmingly represents the straight life, is it too much to ask for a few good lesbians? To show lesbians who only want to make love to lesbians? To show lesbians walking in the house and yelling "honey, I'm home" and there comes another lesbian around the corner with a smile on her face. Am I being too pushy to ask for a lesbian wedding that doesn't have buckets of blood?

Because there has been such a struggle for equality and fair representation in the media for gays and lesbians, it is disheartening and unsettling to hear about another wonderful beautiful lesbian who will have meaningless sex with a man. Whey can't she have meaningless sex with a woman?

No woman could love Silvia the way Pepa did and then say "I am in mourning for my woman, so I will now have sex with men." That is not how lesbians mourn. Lesbians mourn like everyone else--we cry, we eat, we drink, we sleep, and we are tremendously sad. We are not shagging, banging or blowing men.

Let Pepa be a lesbian. Let lesbians be lesbians.

We talked about this, and I think Pepa will become someone like Jason Bourne. Her grief and pain were so much she had to block everything else and become a totally different person. She'd sleep with men like it's part of the job, so I'm not worried about it, since there's really no emotional attachment involved. Like Jason Bourne, she'd remember fragments of her happy memories, and I think that's what Ghost!Silvia (TM Acidburn) will do - to remind her that she loved and was loved in return. And maybe, she'd encounter various characters along her Bourne Supremacy journey, all played by Marian, all to remind her of her own humanity.

I hate to say this, but I think this is a perfect role for Laura, and a perfect setup for Marian's return. Alex TinyPenis Pina might somehow redeem himself, even though he'll always have a tiny penis.

Thanks for the lecture.

dr piper--when matt damon/jason bourne sleeps with a guy in an undercover operation, I will be very pleased. I will then know we have turned the tide, and it isn't just lesbians who are jumping the fence.

Dr. Booker, thank you for your lecture. I have dated men and after a break up I shagged a woman before I moved on to the next man. Seriously girls LHDP without Silvia and all the testosteron flying by is no longer my cup of B&N tea. Miss Sanchez has grown as an actress but her storyline hasn't unfortunately. What's next? SM? A threesome?

Booker - Matt Damon and Ben Afleck, hmmm, there were rumors. If the mission required that Jason Bourne sleep with some guy, I'm sure he would, not because he's emotionally damaged, but because it's necessary. However, history has not had a lot of gay spies - until recently, they weren't even allowed into spy agencies - but it's full of seductive Mata Haris. Why? Because men think with their tiny penises. This is why Pepa would sometimes need to sleep with them - to get what she needs. Not because she derives some pleasure from it.

Spies are a different breed than most of us. Pepa would make a good spy / assassin because she's beautiful, and she's a lesbian (i.e., not prone to falling in love with her presumably male assets).

I'm still saying this is a good role for Laura, and a justifiable evolution for Pepa. She's not going to sleep with men and turn into a hired assassin, instead, she's going to turn into an elite spy who's trained to get what she needs, even if it means killing or boning someone.

Big difference.

piper, is boning a man like julia child deboning a chicken or a duck? I think pepa would make a great spy...maybe she could have a video pen like someone I know!
this is what pepsiu is all about, stimulating discussions after a lecture.
By the way, one of my favorite books as a wee child was Harriet the Spy.

Dr.P I so dig the Bourne explanation & I agree yes Laura would be good in this kinda role. Dr.B the character Pepa was labeled a lesbian & YES that means prefers the company of women instead of men. I now know where my male cohorts get confused.

Definition of lesbian : A homosexual woman who prefer to have romantic and sexual relationships only with other WOMEN.
Alex Pina only cares about the ratings, and hasn't taken the best interests of the fans at heart! He should remember that it was US who put that show where it is now!

I doubt that Alex Pina thinks the success of the show is due to the fans. I agree that Laura is doing a fantastic job with the crap she is being given, one has to admire how she has grown as an actress and its a pity that more screen time hasnt been devoted to her.

^ Absolutely no argument from me there, Dr.P. However I doubt that that is the scenario TPTB are going to present to us. (One of you lovely Spanish speaking folks please correct me if i'm wrong) Didn't LS pretty much say in the radio interview she did earlier that Pepa's gonna hook up with men not so much for espionage reasons, but rather to 'cope with her loneliness'? That's the impression i've been under.

Yeah, what anonymous above me said...

I can't understand quite what LS says in the interview, but it's something like, she's going to use men "para calmar (something) falta de cariño". If what LS says is right, it sounds more like Pepa will be deliberately seeking out men to sleep with, not just sleeping with them for work purposes.

Dr. B, as promised, I finally got around to posting :) With regards to your post, I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said. It is brilliant and thoughtful, as always. Stereotypes exist for a reason; one of them is to oppress a class of individuals. And unfortunately, I think we're still a long way away from changing the stereotype of what defines a woman as a lesbian or a man/woman as bisexual.

I'm not sure what to make of LS' statements re: Pepa hooking up w/ men. I hope it's for the mission mainly b/c I'm kinda sick of the fallout that occurs everytime TPTB disappoint us - it's so fucking disheartening. I'm sure there will still be some sort of fallout if Pepa's only doing it for the mission - doesn't make it any more right. But at least in that scenario I can see it as yet another thing she has to struggle with as she tries to hold onto herself while still performing her duties as an assassin.

Just saw the eps. with pepa hooking up with a man (yet again). Just as I was about to get furious I remembered that my gf who identifies as a lesbian had sex with men as well. She has never had an emotional connection with a man though. I call her lesbian identified bisexual and make fun of her but I guess she identifies herself as a lesbian. What I meant to say is that there are people like Pepa in the real world but only we know about them. For everybody else it seems as even a lesbian would shag a man when the opportunity arises so I still don't understand why the writers of the show took that route. I guess I am still angry...

I agree except that maybe Pepa was not a lesbian but bi sexual. I doubt if Pepa confession to Silvia at the cabaña would have been " I realized I like women that day when we kissed at Sarita' s First Communion ( and make it a first kiss fantasy for bth, hard to believe Pepa was still a VIRGIN at that point-- the thing with both Aitor and Deker was possible. But ten again uman behavior and sexuality are so complex.

ilovepepsi said...

Re-reading comments and my own, yes Pepa was bi-sexual and strong libido like in " having sex as a nature call not love". ATTP didn' t do his homework and his writers were sloppy bastards, did not keep time properly, as ei Silvia tells Gonzalo: our son would be 26 months old, NO. Sabina wasn' t 26 months yet and she was born when Silvia got shot 3 months pregnant. And I don' t get she never talked about that with Pepa. When Silvia is dying and she is paralized with fear she tels DL she used to run away from pain, at 15 year old, tok my car and ran away to another city. REALLY? 15 with a car? And what happened to the " kiss at 18? Although Silvia WAS 18, we were not told Pepa was 18 as well, it is too much to believe a 15 seducing a 18
