"I'm Gonna Sock You in the Face with Love..."

  by KalikeCA, Esq

Who is Pepa Miranda? Before we can answer this question, we first have to ask: what drives her? What motivates Pepa to act the way that she does? It is only after we answer this question that we can truly begin to understand who Pepa is. After all, a person's motivations help shape who they are - their character traits, their decisions in life, etc. So, what is the driving force behind all that is Pepa Miranda? I believe the answer to this question is love. More specifically, Pepa's love for Silvia, because "Silvia is who (Pepa's) dreamed of (her) entire life."

Pepa is a self-professed "romantic fool." When Pepa falls in love, she falls hard, as if she's been punched in the face with love. It gives her "the feeling you get when someone rubs you with their fingers and your stomach turns queasy like you just got off a carnival ride," and it literally becomes the driving factor behind her life decisions. Pepa decided to stay in San Antonio because Silvia - her love - asked her to. And even though Silvia made it clear at this point that she's straight, Pepa is "not the kind of person who gives up." Her love for Silvia is so great that she was willing to be around Silvia in any way that she could, even if it was only as friends sharing breakfast at the shooting gallery or working on a case together.

Love gave Pepa the courage to ask Silvia out on a date when she sensed that there was something more than friendship between them, and love continued to give Pepa hope after she was stood up on their date. When they finally kissed, it was love that provided Pepa with the patience to give Silvia the time she needed to process their new relationship, and love that helped her find the right words to say to alleviate Silvia's fears and teach Silvia how to be with her.

Love saw Pepa through Silvia's journey of self-discovery. She literally felt it wrap around her on that day in the countryside, when Silvia showed Don Lorenzo that Pepa was the person she loved, the person Silvia wanted to spend her life with. And love carried their relationship to the point where they were living in domestic bliss a year later.

But love is not infallible. As strong as Pepa's love for Silvia was, and as much as it helped her realize her dream of being with Silvia, it was also Pepa's love (and a lot of tequila) that nearly tore them apart forever...

Note: I'm sorry to leave you all hanging, but this lecture is long, and at Dr. Booker's wonderful suggestion, I decided to split it up into two parts. I hope you've all enjoyed it thus far, and I will post the rest of the lecture tomorrow.

Awesome lecture, KC. A very wise person just recently told me that "love is just a big conspiracy" and "not inherently good."

But your thesis on how far love can go has made me reconsider.

And after careful consideration, I agree with my wise friend - that love is just an emotional acid reflux. But that doesn't mean you can't believe in it too.

Thanks for your 1st lecture!

Kalike (or is it Dr. Kalike? What are your credentials anyways?? j/k)

Fabulous 1st lecture! It is very clear that love is the driven force behind Pepa's nature.

It wasn't said in the show but implied that the reason Pepa joined the police because she had fell in love with a female SubInspector. So in conclusion, Pepa's career choice as a Police Agent was for love.

"Love saw Pepa through Silvia's journey of self-discovery" - I couldn't have explained it any better.
I believe in that scene, some viewers were focus on the conflict between Silvia and Don Lorenzo, not realizing what Pepa is feeling or thinking. Sure, the majority of responses would be that Pepa must have been scared out of her mind being caught by Don Lorenzo. Or she wanted to get out of there as fast as she could and so forth.

But with what we know about Pepa, she would have stayed to stand behind/beside/in front of her love, Silvia. So yes, Pepa saw through the journey but also stood by and supported.

Dr. Piper… I don’t believe this wise person who told you "love is just a big conspiracy" and "not inherently good" did not explained in content what him or her meant.

I’m sure this Wise Person believes in the concept of love and what it stands for. But love has many sides, it is convoluted, endearing, messy, sexy, tragic… the list goes on. LHDP concept on love is supported by all that I described and more.

But love is also an emotion that can be changed, abused, or used properly.

I know I sound like a scorched lover but I’m not. I have loved and been loved. I have broken hearts and had my heart broken. But that isn’t going to stop me from embracing love.

Because once you know you have found the right person, everything you have experienced with love would have made it worth while for the wait.

love is a very strong force in controlling a persons actions because when you think w/ your heart you RARELY think w/ your brain.

Angie, no "Dr." for me. I don't think that I've earned such a prestigious title, and even if I somehow have, it just feels weird. I'm completely ok w/ just Kalike, or KC (as Dr. Piper prefers), or even just K.

Excellent points and observations, about the show and love in general. You too, Swiftlyreloaded. I completely agree that love can overcome rational thoughts, which is why it can often lead to turmoil.

Dr. Piper, since you extended the invitation to lecture here, your opinion means the most to me, so I'm glad you're pleased w/ the lecture.
